IZON Lenses

IZON LENSES

We are the first in Idaho to offer the latest in wavefront-guided technology to quickly and accurately “map” a patient’s eyes for irregularities that can cause vision problems such as difficulty driving at night, glare and halos around lights, poor depth perception and poor color definition. This map, called an iPrint™, is like a fingerprint of the eye, and each person’s is unique. The iPrint is then converted into a digital prescription that drives the manufacturing of the customized iZon® High Resolution Lenses.

“The added benefits for our patients is that the iZon High Resolution Lenses go beyond traditional lenses, to provide improved contrast acuity, improved night vision and generally sharp vision (GSV) and the ability to see color with greater richness and intensity. The iZon Lenses can reduce the glare, halos and starbursts many people see around lights when driving at night,” explained [Doctor’s Name]. “The difference between traditional glasses and the iZon Lenses is like the difference between regular television and high-definition television—the picture is clearer, sharper and more vivid.”

Retinal Imaging

Improving Eye-Care Through New Technology

OPTOMAP is the most advanced retinal exam technology. It dramatically enhances our capability to help you and your family, care for your vision. The OPTOMAP enables us to make an early diagnosis of many abnormal vision conditions.

How Does it Work?

Optomap combines the science of retinal photography with recent advances in software and imaging technology. It provides and ultra-widefield view of the retina **is non-invasive ** allows you to view your retinal image with the doctor during the exam ** and provides an annual, permanent record wich gives your doctor comparisons for tracking and diagnosing potential issues.

Is This Procedure Necessary?

Optomap helps us enhance documentation, with digital photos, of your visual health over time. We can then more accurately monitor many eye conditions including; glaucoma, cataracts, macular degeneration, retinal holes or detachments and systemic diseases such as diabetes, stroke, and high blood pressure. Individuals who already show some type of ocular abnormality, imaging may be medically necessary and will be performed at intervals deemed appropriate by Dr. Schwers and Bewley.

As our patient you've come to expect the highest-level of care for yourself and your family. That's our commitment to you.

Eye Infections, Eye Injuries, Dry Eyes

Our office provides emergency services for eye infections and eye injuries. Please call our office at 208-939-7000 during office hours, after hours or on weekends. Our staff will work with you to schedule an appointment as soon as possible. State of the art microscopes allow us to examine the front surface of the eye and facial areas around the eye for infection or injury. After assessing the extent of the injury or infection a treatment plan will be formulated and explained to you. Treatment may include medications and supportive care. Follow-up visits to monitor your recovery will be scheduled as needed.

Dry Eyes: Symptoms include scratchy eyes, burning, mild redness and gritty feeling eyes. Oral medications, reading, computer tasks and dry environments may aggravate marginally dry eyes. Dry eyes can be diagnosed by using dyes to observe tear patterns, evaluation of the amount of tears on the front of the eye and from review of your symptoms. Treatment may include artificial tears; eye drops for treating allergies; and/or punctal plugs inserted in the tear drainage canals.

LASIK

About Lasik

Extraordinary advances in the treatment of myopia (nearsightedness), hyperopia (farsightedness), and astigmatism have been made possible with the introduction of laser technology. This technology is sophisticated, precise, and accurate, aided by computer-based measurements that customize each procedure.

In the fall of 1995, the excimer laser was approved by the FDA. Guided by a skilled surgeon, the excimer laser precisely produces a gently beam of "cool" laser light, which does not burn, but vaporizes a microscopic amount of tissue to reshape the cornea. Laser vision correction is a highly effective, safe, and quick outpatient procedure. In the ten years after its introduction, more than 1,500,000 excimer procedures have been performed worldwide.

As your co-managing doctor, I specialize in the following medical tasks to be sure your outcome is successful!

- Review treatment options and help select the best procedure for you.

- Perform a pre-operative evaluation and answer your questions to ensure you understand the procedure and that your expectations are realistic.

- Perform follow-up exams and prescribe or alter medications as needed.

- Evaluate your level of correction, and possibly assist in the decision for enhancement or lenses for any remaining nearsightedness or farsightedness.

- Continue to monitor the health of your eyes throughout your life.

Are you a candidate?

You should be:

- At least 18 years old
- Within range of procedure
- Not pregnant or nursing.

You should have:

- No active eye disease
- Stable prescription for 1 year
- No restrictions mandated by employer.

You should have realistic goals:

- To be less dependent on glasses
- To be able to see the clock in the morning
- To be able to swim without contacts
- To be able to care for the baby in the middle of the night.

Lenses & Lab

Plastic Lenses

Plastic lenses are much lighter and less breakable than glass lenses. Traditional plastic lenses are made from a hard resin that is cast or molded into lens blanks. These plastic blanks can be ground into specific shapes to fit any lens frame. The most common plastic lens material is called CR-39.

Hi-Index Lenses

Hi-index is an advanced material that provides significant advantages over traditional plastic or glass lenses. Hi-index lenses are:
Thinner, so you'll have slimmer glasses and can choose from a wider choice of frames. Lighter, so your glasses weigh less and you'll feel more comfortable. Flatter, so your lenses will bulge less from the frame (and if you are farsighted, you eyes will appear less magnified and more natural in size).

Hi-index refers to the lens material's index of refraction, or the degree to which it refracts light. The higher index of refraction enables the material to bend light to a greater degree, so less curvature is needed in the lens to achieve a specific prescription power. Because less material is required to produce the lens, lenses are lighter.

Polycarbonate Lenses

For maximum impact resistance, polycarbonate is the lens material of choice. Polycarbonate lenses are ten times more impact resistant than conventional plastic or glass lenses. While impact resistant does not mean shatterproof, polycarbonate lenses can give an extra level of protection to lens wearers who have active lives or participate in sports. Polycarbonate is the material preferred for children and teenagers - as will as people who work in certain manufacturing occupations.
In addition to its impact-resistant qualities, polycarbonate is thinner and lighter than conventional plastic or glass lenses - and it comes with built-in ultraviolet protection.

Macular Degeneration

Important Message to our Patients

There has been a huge breakthrough in the study of the devastating disease, macular degeneration. I just wanted to make my patients over the age of 40 aware of this new evidence.

Macular degeneration is a disease that generally affects people after the age of 50. It can be hereditary. It is estimated that over 14 million people in the U.S. have ARMD (age related macular degeneration). It is estimated that 30% of people over the age of 75 have ARMD, and 23% will develop it over the next 5 years.

Recent advances in our understanding of ARMD reveal that diet can strongly influence the risk of the disease. Fruits and vegetables may slow the risk and help stop the progression of ARMD. In addition, compounds called carotenoids, found in spinach, collard greens, and kale have been shown to be the most important. A recent study showed that subjects who consumed high amount of spinach had an 86% lower chance of ARMD than those with low spinach consumption.

I realize that spinach is not high on everyone's food list, so vitamin therapy can be a great substitute. I have prescribed vitamins for ARMD for years. It is currently the only treatment available for this disease. The vitamins readily available at most pharmacies, however, do not include carotenoids. I have researched different vitamins to find brands that do carry them, and have found a brand which does, and is cost effective. This brand can also take the place of your current multi-vitamin in many cases. I have samples on hand, and keep a supply available for purchase. Please ask me any questions you may have during your exam.
